The Consulate General of Nepal in Lhasa organized a seminar on “Investment Opportunities in Nepal” on 17 June 2019 in Lhasa with the participation of about 40 leading Tibet-based Chinese public and private companies. Similarly, high level officials from Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, Department of Commerce, Federation of Industry and Commerce, State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Committee of TAR and media persons also attended the Seminar.

Her Excellency Ms. Luo Mei, Vice-Chairperson of the People’s Government of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China, attended the function as Special Guest. In her remarks, Her Excellency Ms. Luo Mei stated that investment is an important pillar in promoting economic exchanges between Nepal and China, and expressed the hope that Tibet’s businessmen will take the opportunity for plentiful investments available in Nepal. She asked the businessmen to coordinate closely with the Consulate General of Nepal, Lhasa, representatives of Investment Board, Nepal and Embassy of Nepal, Beijing for taking advantage of the investment seminar. Stating that TAR attaches high importance to Nepal-China bilateral trade, especially border trade with Nepal, she said that Jilong (Kerung) port has been upgraded as an international port for third country trade and would play an important role in enhancing the investment environment.

In his welcome remarks, Consul General Mr. Gobinda Bahadur Karkee thanked the Government of Tibet, Her Excellency Ms. Luo Mei and other officials of relevant departments of TAR for their kind support and coordination in organizing the program. He also highlighted the importance of foreign direct investment for Nepal’s development and requested the Chinese companies to invest in Nepal.

Joint Secretary of the Office of the Investment Board Nepal, Mr. Balram Rijyal and Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission from Embassy of Nepal in Beijing, Mr. Sushil K Lamsal made presentations on the investment opportunities in Nepal.

Similarly, Deputy Director General of Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of TAR, Mr. Dawa Ciren highlighted Nepal-China relations of close friendship and co-operative partnership. He shed light on the significance of Nepal as an active partner of BRI and as China’s major access route to South Asia. Mr. Dawa recalled Her Excellency Ms. Luo Mei’s participation in the Nepal Investment Summit held in Kathmandu in March 2019. He hoped that this seminar would enhance the understanding of the Investment policies and potential industries for investment in Nepal among the Chinese enterprises.

A Question and Answer Session was held at the conclusion of the program, where Consul General Mr. Karkee, the speakers and DDG of Department of Commerce of TAR Mr. Yang Guoliang responded to queries by participants.
